Intertextual analyses of Galatians 1:15–16 often focus on allusions to the call narratives of Isaiah and Jeremiah, found in Isaiah 49, Isaiah 42, and Jeremiah 1:5. However, what if these intertextual connections go beyond allusions to the call narratives of Isaiah and Jeremiah and also include echoes of prophetic call narratives? To explore these connections, this article draws on Norman Habel’s analysis of prophetic call narratives, which reveals that the Old Testament narratives of the prophets’ calls follow a pattern rooted in the call narratives of Moses and Gideon. Using Habel’s analysis, this article demonstrates that the intertextual connections in Galatians 1:15–16 not only allude to the call narratives of Isaiah and Jeremiah but also include echoes of prophetic call narratives that are deeply rooted in the call narratives of Moses and Gideon. Through these echoes, Paul creatively adapts and reinterprets the elements that often appear in prophetic call narratives to suit his rhetorical and theological purposes.
